The word patreian is a definition taken from Roman civil law; this term was applied by Romulus to the first senators of Rome. These hundred and their descendants constituted the nobility of Rome and with the title a responsibility for the people of Rome who were obliged to choose one of these patres as his patron.

The patron was obliged to watch over the interests of his cliens (clients), whether present or absent to protect his person or property. This relationship formed an integral part of the governmental system, designed to succeed by being based on the principle of reciprocal bonds for mutual interest.
